Why Choose Eureka Kikuyu grass for your lawn

Eureka Kikuyu grass is grown and recommended by Anco for its outstanding ability to repair from wear, its winter colour retention, and early spring Green up. Anco’s Eureka Kikuyu develops less thatch than some other Kikuyu types resulting in fewer maintenance requirements to maintain a good-looking lawn.

Eureka Kikuyu is the ideal grass for backyard lawns that receive lots of wear and tear from dogs, children, and general use. The creeping nature of Eureka Kikuyu will help the lawn to recover from excessive use faster than alternative grass types.

Use Kikuyu when a lush green lawn in full sun is required. A Eureka Kikuyu lawn will survive when short dry periods are experienced in summer. Due to its extensive root system, Eureka Kikuyu will not wilt in hot weather if given periodic watering. To perform at its best, Eureka Kikuyu requires a sunny position.

Cost of Eureka Kikuyu

Eureka Kikuyu is an economical grass type, especially when its outstanding repair qualities from wear are considered. At a generally cheaper price per square metre, your new lawn project will be more economical when compared to other lawn varieties and surface types.

How should I care for my Eureka Kikuyu lawn?

As is the case with most lawn types regular mowing during the growing seasons of Spring, Summer and Autumn is a key factor to maintaining a healthy and dense lawn canopy that is capable of resisting disease and wear.

A catcher should be used on Eureka Kikuyu to minimise thatch development and inhibit disease build-up. If mown regularly Eureka will look outstanding when cut at 20mm but will still look good if mown to lengths of up to 35mm. If mown with a Cylinder mower it will tolerate and flourish at 15mm and provide a dense tight surface.

Irrigate Eureka Kikuyu in summer and when prolonged dry periods are experienced in the warmer months. The best watering practice is to irrigate for long periods and infrequently and as required. This watering regime establishes a deep root system that enables the lawn to cope with long dry, and hot periods over summer. Shallow root zones are a result of short and frequent watering and should be avoided.

In Spring, early Summer and Autumn apply a high Nitrogen type fertiliser such as this: Lawn Solutions Premium Lawn Food 4kg.

If a thatch layer has developed, Eureka Kikuyu turf will benefit from a very short mow with a catcher in its second spring. Drop your mower down to its lowest level and scalp off the thatch layer. The lawn will be brown for a few weeks and recover well if irrigated and fertilised following the spring scalping process. This process will aid irrigation water and rainfall to penetrate evenly into the soil and eliminates slight undulations in lawn levels. It also reduces unsightly patchiness caused by the mower from occurring.

Spring is also an ideal time to Topdress Eureka with sandy soil. This will eliminate low spots in the lawn that may hold water in winter.

If dry spots are observed in Summer, applying a wetting agent will eradicate them and provide an even colour to the lawn. Use this product from late November if dry patches or wilting are present Wetta Soil Hose-On Soil Wetter 2L pack.

In Autumn the use of a Complete fertiliser such as Anco Lawn Starter will help maintain the root system over winter and aid in a faster Spring Green up of the dormant grass.

Is Eureka Kikuyu weed resistant?

If correctly maintained Eureka Kikuyu will inhibit weed invasion in your lawn better than most other lawn types due to its aggressive nature, thick canopy and rapid wear recovery. The correct use of a pre-emergent herbicide will keep your Kikuyu lawn free of most seeded weed types. Use Oxafert in early autumn and late winter for Wintergrass weed control in Eureka Kikuyu.

Eureka and the Victorian climate
